Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The role of print media in promoting human rights is critical, particularly in conflict-prone areas like Maiduguri Local Government, Borno State. As a region affected by prolonged insurgency and humanitarian crises, Maiduguri faces widespread human rights violations, including forced displacement, gender-based violence, and limited access to justice (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). Print media serves as a platform for amplifying the voices of marginalized groups, holding authorities accountable, and fostering public awareness about rights and responsibilities (Ahmed & Garba, 2023). However, concerns about censorship, political interference, and limited investigative resources often hinder the effectiveness of human rights reporting in print media (Bello & Abdullahi, 2025). This study investigates the nature and scope of print media coverage of human rights issues in Maiduguri, with a focus on identifying patterns, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the prevalence of human rights violations in Maiduguri, print media coverage of these issues is often inadequate and episodic. Reports frequently lack depth and fail to highlight systemic abuses or propose actionable solutions (Yusuf & Mohammed, 2024). Factors such as limited access to conflict zones, fear of reprisal, and financial constraints contribute to the underreporting of human rights violations. This lack of comprehensive coverage diminishes the role of print media as a watchdog and advocate for justice. Addressing these challenges requires an in-depth examination of the current state of human rights reporting in Maiduguri’s print media and strategies to enhance its impact.
